We are husband-and-wife architects who believe that your environment influences how you feel and ultimately how you are. Your immediate environment ,as well as, objects and people in them, whom and which you interact with, influence you day by day and shape your being. Therefore, physically and mentally healthy environment and objects inspires you to live well, to create beauty, to love fully and enjoy life completely, like a good friend would inspire you.
We also believe that good products come from healthy and happy production process. The act of creating as well as the act of using such products should be healthy and contribute to a more beautiful life.
Our goal
Jai works with artisan communities in order to foster their healthy and happy way of production and offer our creations to the world. We believe that the world deserves healthier and more beautiful (beauty in its nature and appearance) products as well as way of productions. In the process, we aim to help artisans sustain their way of life with a more justified and dignified income. With better income, more apprentices will be attracted to this ancient crafts, preventing this art form from extinction.
Why Jai?
"Jai" is a Thai word which means heart / passion. It describes the way we approach our craft. With passion, we design products that are natural, high quality, unique and contemporary with respect to local culture. Our creations are all individually handmade. All textiles are hand woven by rural women groups whose weaving skills have been passing on from generation to generation
"Jai" also describes compassion we have for people and the earth. Our baby products are made from cotton and silk that are produced naturally in the traditional way by small farming communities.
No pesticides,
No synthetic fertilizers and
No genetically modified materials are used.
Our baby textiles are unbleached and use natural dyes and dyeing process to ensure that they are safe for users, producers and the earth.
Our creations are exclusively produced by small rural communities. By working with Jai, they are ensured a good alternative income while continuing their farming livelihood. We hope to provide more opportunities for the communities to create more products so they can earn needed extra income and thus, attract more people to stay and work in their communities.
Our friend
To ensure that our production is environmental friendly and socially responsible, we have been working with Fai Gaem Mai. Fai Gaem Mai is an academic science and technology research and development institute and a part of Chiang Mai University. Their objectives are to research, develop and impart eco-textile production knowledge that is derived from local traditions. While working with each community to ensure their production process meet high standard, Fai Gaem Mai is preparing for organic certification and is expecting to obtain the certificate within 2009.
